"Let a great assembly be": Maxine Peake reads The Masque of Anarchy
Come all and bear witness! Actress Maxine Peake joins us for an evening exploring the social and political fallout from the Peterloo Massacre.
Maxine Peake will read Percy Bysshe Shelley’s poem “The Masque of Anarchy”. Written in the aftermath of Peterloo, it was repressed until after his death, such was its vitriol, effrontery and controversy.
Take home an extract from this impassioned poem, lovingly hand-printed using our beautiful Columbian Printing Press, and discover enlightening items from our collections in this unmissable evening marking the 200th anniversary of Peterloo.
