This seminar is part of the Tissue Systems seminar series. Laminins are a defining component of all basement membranes and essential for multicellular life. How laminins polymerise into cell-associated networks and how they mediate cell adhesion remains incompletely understood. My research is tackling these questions by crystallographic structure determination of selected laminin fragments and by structure-guided biochemical experiments. In my seminar, I will briefly review the current understanding of cell adhesion to the laminin G domain and then discuss our recent advances in defining the molecular mechanism of laminin polymerisation. Although I will show atomic structures, I aim to make my presentation accessible to anyone with an interest in protein function and extracellular matrix biology.
