Dr. Rafael Valim is a visiting Professor from the Catholic University of Sao Paulo.
His lecture will consider the negative impact of “Lawfare” in Latin-American countries,
and particularly in Brazil where civil and political rights have been under constant attack.
It is not simply a question of judicialization of politics or politicization of justice.
Law is abused in a battle against an enemy in an asymmetrically unjustifiable judicial attack.
Once the battle is transferred to the realm where the legitimacy of a war is defined
by lawyers and jurists, society finds difficult to understand the nuances, which leads
to the practice of arbitrary actions against the political target, since such actions carry
a false appearance of legality. Lawfare tactics therefore involve manipulation of public
opinion with the purpose of harming – or annihilating – an opponent.
This event will be followed by a drinks reception where discussions can continue.
