Schumpeter remains a key figure in the literature on entrepreneurship. In this seminar Schumpeterian analysis is used to explore the remarkable career of Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795), emphasising his continuing relevance for our understanding of entrepreneurs today. The seminar will discuss the strengths of Schumpeter’s insights into the entrepreneur. Wedgwood also reveals a number of shortcomings in Schumpeter’s approach, especially in his understanding of supportive networks for entrepreneurship and appreciation of patterns of consumption and lifestyles.
