This seminar is about the historical future as atmospheric researchers envisioned it in the early decades of the twentieth century, from the era of Marconi wireless and the Wright flier to digital computing and the TIROS weather satellite. It maps the history of weather studies and charts the pathways by which meteorology became atmospheric science.

A 1960 planning document crowed optimistically, "Our goal is to portray everything atmospheric, everywhere, always." In their own ways and in their own eras, the protagonists in this story would have agreed.

This presentation combines intimate story telling with big picture historiography, introducing a methodology intended to be interesting and useful for historians of all stripes.
