Join us for this research seminar, part of the Analysis and dynamics seminar series.
In this talk David will outline five new theoretical developments concerning multi-dimensional piecewise-linear maps. Such maps can be used to model the dynamical behaviour of a range of physical systems that involve switches or other abrupt features. Piecewise-linear maps readily exhibit chaotic dynamics and other complicated features because their kinks are a source of extreme nonlinearity. Yet, where it is difficult to analyse such behaviour in smooth nonlinear maps, some aspects of piecewise-linear maps can be understood at a detailed level by combining linear algebra and combinatorics with standard analytical techniques.
